As with most Massachusetts towns, Brockton is steeped in American colonial history. The city was first settled in 1656 and was officially incorporated in 1821. There are a number of sites to visit in Brockton: The Old Colony Historical Society Museum is a great place to learn about the city's past, and the Brockton Fire Museum is perfect for those interested in the city's firefighting history. The Brockton Symphony Orchestra is also worth a visit - it's one of the oldest orchestras in the country and features performances by world-renowned musicians.
For nature lovers, Brockton is home to a number of parks and hiking trails. Some local favorites include D.W. Field Park, which has a playground, picnic areas, and walking trails, and Westgate Mall, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll. At Ames Nowell State Park, you can go hiking, camping, and fishing, and in the winter, there are cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. The park's network of trails also connects to the Massasoit State Park, so you can explore even more of the great outdoors!
