As with most Massachusetts towns, Brockton is steeped in American colonial history. The city was first settled in 1656 and was officially incorporated in 1821. There are a number of sites to visit in Brockton: The Old Colony Historical Society Museum is a great place to learn about the city's past, and the Brockton Fire Museum is perfect for those interested in the city's firefighting history. The Brockton Symphony Orchestra is also worth a visit - it's one of the oldest orchestras in the country and features performances by world-renowned musicians.

For nature lovers, Brockton is home to a number of parks and hiking trails. Some local favorites include D.W. Field Park, which has a playground, picnic areas, and walking trails, and Westgate Mall, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll. At Ames Nowell State Park, you can go hiking, camping, and fishing, and in the winter, there are cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. The park's network of trails also connects to the Massasoit State Park, so you can explore even more of the great outdoors! Hikers will enjoy the Bay Circuit Trail, which runs through the city and offers stunning views of the Boston skyline. The Brockton Audubon Society also offers a variety of nature programs and hikes, with the added bonus of guided birdwatching.

In the South Street Historic District, from South Street to Main Street to Warren Avenue, you'll find a number of Victorian-style homes, as well as the Plymouth County Courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The district is also home to a number of restaurants, cafes, and shops such as the Book Shop, which has been in business since 1927. At the Fuller Craft Museum, you can see a variety of contemporary art, and the Brockton Art Center features rotating exhibitions by local artists.

Brockton hosts a number of events and festivals throughout the year. The city celebrates St. Patrick's Day with a parade, and the Brockton Fair is one of the largest fairs in New England. The Summer Concert Series is a great way to enjoy live music, and the Farmers' Market, held on Thursdays from June to October, is the perfect place to get fresh local produce.
